Drinking Water Source Protection

Drinking Water Source Protection (DWSP) is all about keeping the 'source' of our drinking water safe, usable, and protected.

Drinking water sources

  • A municipal water system in an urban area such as a town or city
  • Properties in the country and away from town services have water wells that get their water from below the ground
  • Some landowners will get their water from a lake or river

Whatever the 'source', it is important to keep our water clean!

Source Protection Plan

Through the Clean Water Act, 2006:

  • A local committee was established to develop a Source Protection Plan to protect municipal sources of drinking water.
  • The Source Protection Plan determines the areas that are vulnerable or at risk of contamination.
  • The plan identifies potential threats and develop plans to deal with the threats to our drinking water sources.

Source Protection Committee

The Saugeen Valley and Grey Sauble Conservation Authorities along with the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula have partnered together to work with the Source Protection Committee to coordinate the development of Source Protection Plans for our watershed.

The Source Protection Plan for this region has been approved by the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change Canada and took effect in 2016.

Learn more about the Drinking Water Source Protection project.  You can find out if you are in a vulnerable area, how plan policies apply to you, find out more about water in this region, and how you can help keep local water sources safe and clean.

Local partnership includes Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority, Grey Sauble Conservation Authority and the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula.
