Two positions, four-month contract with possibility of extension.

Summary of Functions
The Water Resource Technician will support water quality monitoring within the Saugeen watershed. This program includes monitoring of surface water chemistry, hydrology, meteorology, lacustrine and riverine morphology, and aquatic biology.
The Water Resource Technician will also support the development of reports, fact sheets, and other documents. They will perform data management including data entry and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), developing graphs and figures, and data analysis.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following competencies:
- Post secondary degree or diploma in biology, environmental sciences, or a related field, or working towards one
- Experience in water quality monitoring
- Experience in the management and QA/QC of large datasets, WISKI experience is an asset
- Experience collecting riverine morphology information, OSAP certification is an asset
- Understanding of Provincial Water Quality Objectives, Canadian Water Quality Guidelines, and Ontario Drinking Water Standards
- Ontario Benthic Biomonitoring Network or Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network certification is an asset
- Must have a valid class “G” driver’s license in good standing
- Must be comfortable working in and along waterways and lakes; experience sampling in winter through frozen lake/river conditions is an asset
- Ability to operate and maintain power tools
- Understanding of MSDS and WHMIS for the use of licensed laboratory chemicals
- Very strong attention to detail
- Strong work ethic and positive team attitude
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, and organization skills
- Ability to communicate clearly in English and follow instructions in both written and oral formats
- Pleasure Craft Operators Licence is an asset
- Valid First Aid certificate is an asset
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with the monitoring and analysis of surface water chemistry, hydrology, meteorology, sediment chemistry, lacustrine and riverine morphology, benthic macroinvertebrates, periphyton, zooplankton, and phytoplankton
- Utilize data management tools including WISKI and excel for data management, QA/QC, statistical analysis, and report figure development
- Enter data in database/spreadsheet formats
- Assist with the preparation of figures and reports
- Operate, maintain, calibrate, and install various types of environmental monitoring equipment
- Present at and attend meetings, workshops, and open houses representing the SVCA.
- Present and participate in community educational events
- Responsible to work safely in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all SVCA Health and Safety policies
- Other tasks or duties as required to assist with program implementation in other areas such as terrestrial or ecological mapping
- Other duties as assigned appropriate to the responsibilities of the position
Work Environment and Conditions
This position requires work in an office environment as well as out-of-doors. All successful applicants must possess their own Green Patch CSA approved safety boots. The outdoor field work will require physical effort (e.g., navigating uneven terrain, lifting and carrying heavy equipment, canoeing, and working in all weather conditions including winter surface water sampling). Some field work may consist of longer than expected workday hours. This position will be required to work in and around water.
Training
SVCA offers comprehensive health and safety training including on the job training for the position including WHIMIS and Health and Safety Training.
Location and work period
- SVCA’s Administrative Office, 1078 Bruce Road 12 Formosa, Ontario
- Four months from contract start date, with possibility of extension up to 12 months
- 37.5 hours per week, with occasional evening availability
Wage
- $62,108/annum
- 4% in lieu of vacation pay
Start date: September 2023
