Flood Watch Update Main Saugeen River and Tributaries in the Municipality of West Grey

Sunday, January 7th, 2025 to Monday, January 20th, 2025

Saugeen Conservation advises that the Flood Watch issued on Sunday, January 5th, 2025, is being updated with new information due to changing conditions in areas of West Grey.

MUNICIPALITY OF WEST GREY –

Conditions between the Durham Upper Dam and Durham Middle Dam have improved over the past several days as a result of the water creating a channel through the ice. This has lowered water levels below Durham Upper Dam. However, this improvement has coincided with changing conditions in the Main Saugeen River downstream of the Durham Lower Dam.

Frazil and slush ice has begun to accumulate in the lower channel, adjacent to the Durham Community Centre. Water levels began to increase the morning of Tuesday, January 7th, 2025. Frazil ice is a naturally occurring phenomenon in this area and production is expected to continue for the next several days. This could further contribute to blockage of the Main Saugeen River downstream of the Durham Lower Dam.

SVCA and Municipality of West Grey staff continue to work together to prioritize public safety, with SVCA actively communicating flood forecasting information to municipal staff. As part of these efforts, municipal staff are encouraged to remain prepared to respond should conditions require action.

The public is advised to avoid the Main Saugeen River between the Durham Lower Dam and community ball diamonds, as West Grey may have equipment present to remove blockages from the channel.

The public is also reminded that the Durham Upper Dam walkway and trail between the Upper Dam and Middle Dam remain closed for safety. The public is asked to avoid the area until further notice.

Saugeen Conservation, in its capacity as a Flood Forecasting and Warning agency, will continue to closely monitor the situation 24 hours a day and will provide updates as needed. This statement remains in effect until January 20, 2025 at 4:30pm unless otherwise updated.
