FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 21st, 2024

Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) Issues Varney Conservation Area Update

SAUGEEN WATERSHED, ONTARIO (Bruce, Grey, Huron, Dufferin, and Wellington Counties) –

The pond at Varney Conservation Area was initially closed for the 2023 season as a precautionary
measure following a comprehensive external engineering review of the infrastructure. This assessment
highlighted numerous concerns related to the structural integrity of the water control infrastructure and
the ecological impact on a tributary of Camp Creek, which feeds the online pond. This proactive step
was taken to ensure the safety of the public and to uphold environmental stewardship, reflecting
Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority's commitment to maintaining safe and sustainable recreational
areas.

As review to allow the diversion of water by several agencies continues, it is confirmed that the pond at
Varney Conservation Area will remain closed throughout the upcoming 2024 summer season. This
update is part of SVCA’s commitment to keeping the community informed on the status of the pond at
Varney.

Securing all necessary environmental approvals is a critical component of this process, involving
coordination with several regulatory agencies. These approvals are essential, but they represent just one
facet of the broader efforts needed to ensure the safety and environmental sustainability of the pond.
The reopening of the Varney Pond would require considerable investment. The review process would
encompass not only the structural and operational enhancements needed but also a comprehensive
Public Safety Risk Assessment and Safety Plan. These steps would be crucial in addressing both historical
concerns and future risks. Additional studies related to associated permitting are anticipated.

The SVCA is exploring all avenues to resolve these issues responsibly. The community's patience and
understanding are appreciated as this process continues. All are invited to continue enjoying the Varney
Conservation Area as a picnic spot and the natural beauty offered by our other conservation areas
during this period.
