Saugeen Conservation issues Water Safety Statement due to heavy rainfall throughout the watershed.

ALL SAUGEEN WATERSHED MUNICIPALITIES – Municipality of Arran-Elderslie, Municipality of Brockton, Township of Chatsworth, Municipality of Grey Highlands, Town of Hanover, Township of Howick, Municipality of Morris-Turnberry, Municipality of South Bruce, Township of Huron-Kinloss, Municipality of Kincardine, Town of Minto, Township of Wellington-North, Town of Saugeen Shores, Township of Southgate, Municipality of West Grey. 

Heavy rainfall was received throughout the watershed last night, with up to 50-60 mm of rain recorded in some areas. Ground conditions remain saturated following the spring melt which is resulting in large amounts of runoff into local watercourses. Environment Canada is forecasting showers today, with a chance of thunderstorms. Rainfall totals may reach 15 to 25 millimetres.

Water levels are rising in all local rivers and streams, and may continue to do so throughout the day. While significant flooding is not anticipated, pooling of water has been observed and small watercourses may spill into low-lying areas. Additional rain forecast for Thursday, April 2^nd and Saturday, April 4^th is expected to keep water levels high into early next week.

Hazardous conditions exist around all local watercourses and low-lying areas. Stream banks may be slippery and unstable, and the water is very cold and fast-moving. The public is encouraged to exercise caution around local waterways. Families are reminded to keep children and pets away from rivers and streams.

Saugeen Conservation staff will be closely monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in effect until Monday, April 6^th at 12:00 pm, unless updated otherwise.
