March 23, 2022 - Watershed Conditions Statement - Flood Outlook (PDF)
Forecast rainfall will further elevate water levels across the watershed over the next few days.
A Texas low will be moving through Southern Ontario today, bringing widespread rain and freezing rain to the area. Forecasts are calling for 20-30mm of rainfall beginning this morning and continuing into Thursday, however risk of thunderstorms tonight could bring heavier amounts to localized areas. A Freezing Rain Warning is currently in effect which could result in partially frozen ground conditions, reducing the rate of absorption into the soil and resulting in quick runoff. Areas that remain above the freezing mark may receive higher localized rainfall amounts.
Following this past weekend’s rain and snowmelt event, water levels peaked late Sunday (March 20th) and have been gradually declining but remain high. Watercourses are expected to reach or exceed bankfull conditions over the next few days as more rainfall is added to the system. While significant flooding is not expected at this time, seasonal flooding in traditional low-lying areas will likely occur. Municipal and County staff should check local problem areas and be prepared for closures of low-lying roads. Residents are reminded to stay away from all watercourses. Elevated water levels, fast flowing water, gusting wind, and slippery stream banks will create hazardous conditions near all waterways.
This statement will remain in effect until 4:30 PM on Saturday, March 26, 2022, unless local conditions warrant further updates. SVCA will continue to closely monitor watershed conditions.
