December 29th, 2022 Watershed Conditions Statement Flood Outlook

Saugeen Conservation advises that forecast precipitation, unseasonably warm temperatures and associated snowmelt are likely to result in higher-than-normal water levels across the watershed over the next few days. Daytime high temperatures of +5°C, accompanied by 10 to 20mm of rain will likely melt most of the snowpack and increase the potential for runoff. Snow surveys conducted today revealed between 25 and 65 mm of water currently held in the snowpack.
While significant flooding is not expected, rivers could reach or exceed bankfull conditions, with minor flooding in traditional low-lying areas. The ground is not frozen so there is some potential for infiltration across the watershed which may alleviate minor flooding. Municipal and County staff should monitor problem areas and prepare to close low-lying roads. Residents are reminded to stay away from all watercourses. Cold water, gusty winds, and slippery and unstable stream banks will create hazardous conditions near all waterways.
Saugeen Conservation staff will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide an update if conditions change. This message will remain in place until Monday January 2, 2023 at 12:00PM.
